Ripon Cathedral – 10th centuryInside Ripon CathedralRiponDurham Cathedral 11th centuryThe next four images were beautiful Abbeys from the same time period as the above.They were intact and servicing people until the 16th centurywhen Henry VIII, in order to become more powerful dissolved the monasteries. In the process he ordered the roofs to be torn off causing the buildings to decay.Several hundred of these magnificent buildings would be “alive and well” if not for short sighted people like Henry VIII. Sad to think that close to 1,000 of these structures, like Notre Dame in Paris, could still be standing all around England today…
Hiked from Robin Hood’s Bay to Whitby today.Ummm, steep & wet stones. I think I’m going to need the photographer’s hand for this!All the way down there ‘eh?Whew, time to make friends!Check out that blue sky & water. There’s a seal colony below? Say no more! Down the cliffs we go…It’s low tide so we are able to stand on the seabed.A bit like “where’s waldo?”But look at this face!Getting comfortable.Since we’d seen the view from the cliffs we decided to walk back along the North Sea.With Robin Hood’s Bay in sight, after a 10 mile hike we are almost sad for the day to end.
Even the English signs are genteel!I love this one!However, one day I was in the restroom in a village pub and these 3 jokes were hanging on the wall !!!
