Rivendell to Pandora

IMG_7554
If you’ve seen the movie Avatar, I think you’ll understand why we think this place was the inspiration behind Pandora.
IMG_7395
Plitvice (PLEET veet seh) Lakes National Park. These were the tallest in the park at 250 ft.
IMG_7578
Lakes were a beautiful turquoise.
IMG_7481
Just in case you’ve forgotten us.
IMG_7598
Could not believe how clear the water was!
IMG_7388
Water rushing under and around staircases and boardwalks.
IMG_7543
Love these reflections
IMG_7441
Beautiful
IMG_7478
Waterfalls like this everywhere!
IMG_7436
Sixteen lakes connected by hundreds of falls.
IMG_7432
Even climbed up to a cool and drippy cave.
IMG_7577
Walked 20K (12 miles) the first day and loved every minute.

A little history & a bit of terror

IMG_7176
This is St Euphemia Church, one of the main sites in Rovinj Croatia – where we are visiting.
IMG_7177
Euphemia stands atop the Venetian style bell tower and acts as a weather vane. If she is facing the sea the sailors know they’ll have a good day and if she’s facing the town – not so much!
IMG_7173
St Euphemia, age 15,  was a martyr in the year 300.
IMG_7175
Story goes that she washed up on the shores of Rovinj in this sargaphogus 500 years later. Thus the name of the church.
IMG_7211
We decided to go up the bell tower for views of the surrounding area.
IMG_7230
192 terrifying stairs!
IMG_7210
At the top there was this hole that we could look through to see this crazy staircase.
IMG_7235
Built in 1754 – very scary climbing up AND going down!

Hill towns of Croatia

IMG_7072
Croatia’s landscape is dotted with sleepy, picturesque hill towns.
IMG_7067
Grozjan (grohzh-NYAHN) was the first of three hill towns that we visited.
IMG_7070
It was virtually forgotten until several artists took up residency. Lots of nice galleries to visit.
IMG_7056
Check out these dates.
IMG_7055
RESTORED in 1799! 😀
IMG_7086
Zavrsje (ZAH-vur-shyeh), small, compact and deserted. This was our favorite (favourite for Nathan and Belinda) town of the three that we saw.
IMG_7084
After the Italian exodus post WII this village remains almost uninhabited today.
IMG_7083
Only a very few locals live here now and virtually all of the buildings are abandoned skeletons.
IMG_7087
My very own hobbit house!
IMG_7117
Motovun (moh-toh-VOON), biggest town we visited, built one thousand feet above vineyards and truffle filled forests. Birthplace of Mario Andretti.
IMG_7118
Nice spot to grab lunch before
IMG_7122
walking the walls. Windy up here!
IMG_7124
Commanding view of the countryside below.

When on the Adriatic…

IMG_7025
When you’re in a beautiful town
IMG_7031
where fishing is the main industry
IMG_6960
it’s probably good to order fish for dinner.
IMG_6978
Right!?!
IMG_6976
Ummm, (cover your eyes, Annette). I think I can do this.
IMG_6979
Yep! Pretty tasty!
IMG_6977
Murph liked his squid, too! (wish you were here, Tewks).
IMG_6985
The square where our eatery was located.
IMG_7042
Next day, I thought it would be safe to order crab risotto – here we go again!

Finally!!!

IMG_6966
After just about three weeks of fall like weather we landed in Piran, Slovenia.
IMG_7019
We spent the next day laying at the beach – relaxing and reading.
IMG_7024
Then we walked the ancient path into the old town.
IMG_6994
And explored the charming lanes.
IMG_6951
Spent some time in Tartini Square…
IMG_6962
I thought these fishing storage units were pretty cool. There were about 30 different containers and each had a unique painting of the old town.
IMG_6944
Such a warm evening we decided to stay for sunset.

IMG_6998

This and that

IMG_6770
On the way to Bled we stopped in the village of Radovljica and visited this Catholic church.
IMG_6771
I found it fascinating that so many flowers were used to decorate the ceiling instead of religious figures.
IMG_6937
While staying in Bled, we walked through the neighborhood orchard many times. At first I thought they were just apple trees, then I discovered the plum trees.  Never have I tasted such sweet plums – even the skin was sweet! Yummy
IMG_4702
My favorite selfie.
IMG_4709
My favorite hubby!
IMG_4711
I think this is a fun pic. ❤
